optional excursions
Lisbon Day 3: Fado Dinner - (Evening w/dinner $89; must be pre-booked)
Spend the evening at a traditional Portuguese tavern listening to the music known as Fado. Deriving from the Latin word Fatum—meaning prophecy or fate—Fado is considered to be Portugal’s national musical treasure. Sometimes melancholy and sometimes more upbeat, Fado is intended to reflect the state of the soul. Played on a special “Fado guitar,” the music is similar to the American blues movement, although historically it dates more accurately to African slave songs. Dinner is included during this memorable musical evening.
Please note: This excursion requires advance booking and payment at least 20 days prior to departure.

Lisbon Day 3: Sintra - (Half-day $99)
Travel westward to the area known as the Portuguese Riviera. Your destination is Sintra, a resort considered one of Portugal’s most beautiful areas. Along the way, take in marvelous views of the coastline and Roca Cabo, which frequently served as the departure point for 15th-century navigators. Centuries ago, Sintra served as the summer playground for Portuguese royalty, and 19th-century British poets and writers sang its praises—including Lord Byron, who called it a "glorious Eden." A guided tour of Sintra Palace is included in the excursion.

Seville Day 5: Flamenco Evening with Dinner - (Evening w/dinner $99)
Experience the drama of Flamenco dancing, one of Spain’s most celebrated traditions. Flamenco is a unique and colorful Andalusian art form, combining guitar playing, singing, clapping and dancing. Dinner will be served during the performance.

Madrid Day 9: Toledo - (Full-day $115)
Your guided tour of Toledo begins at the massive Gothic cathedral, which houses 750 medieval stained glass windows and a treasury rich in vessels, made from the gold that Columbus brought back from the New World. Gaze at the sacristy, containing masterpieces by the likes of Van Dyck, El Greco, Rubens and Titian. After a chance to explore the labyrinth of medieval alleyways that make up the heart of the city, visit one of Europe’s oldest synagogues at El Tránsito.

Barcelona Day 17: Gaudi and Modernist Barcelona - (Half-day $85)
Join a professional local guide for this sightseeing tour of Barcelona, focusing on the unique architecture of Antoni Gaudí, the city’s most famous artist. You’ll visit La Sagrada Familia (Church of the Holy Family), Gaudí’s masterwork. As you study the church’s mellifluous lines and multicolored Mediterranean-style mosaic, note that its construction was never completed after Gaudí’s death, but continues sporadically today as funds allow. Then travel through the city, taking in panoramic views of the Columbus Monument, the 14th-century Barrio Gótico, and Montjuïc Hill, where much of the 1992 summer Olympic Games took place. You’ll also visit more Gaudí creations: the Parque Güell, a garden village nestled in the heart of the city; and La Pedrera (Casa Milá), perhaps the most intriguing residential building ever created.

Barcelona Day 18: Montserrat - (Half-day $99)
Journey to the picturesque town of Montserrat, which inspired the composer Richard Wagner as he wrote Parsifal. Its rugged mountain setting attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, who come to pay homage to the Black Virgin in Montserrat’s 9th-century monastery. During your visit, you might catch the strains of the world-acclaimed boys’ choir based here.
